Solacoat Concrete Coating
Heat Reflective Base Coat Concrete Render is a single pack, water based non-hazardous render preparation coating designed to be top coated with either Solacoat or Cool-it Ceram heat reflective colours or a customer preferred Texture Finished Topcoat. It comes in three grades: Fine, Medium and Heavy. The fine grade is designed for concrete (or fibrous cement) formwork in very good condition or recoating existing render in sound condition, to heavy grade for below average formwork where maximum masking of the formwork is required. In total a three coat system with choice of colour finishes.
Note:
The product can be supplied without sand to allow the customer to determine the degree of textured effect
Description
Solacoat Heat Reflective Base Coat Concrete Render is a single pack, water based Non Hazardous render preparation coating designed to be top coated either with either Solacoat , Coolshield Dynasty Heat Reflective Colours or a Customer Preferred Texture Finish Topcoat Solacoat Heat Reflective Base Coat Concrete Render comes in three grades – Fine, Medium and Heavy. The Fine grade is designed for concrete formwork in very good condition or recoating existing render in sound condition. The Medium grade is designed for formwork in average/good condition where a higher degree of masking of the formwork is required. The Heavy grade is for below average formwork where maximum masking of the formwork is required. All grades may be used for the refurbishing of existing coatings in good sound mechanical condition. The Base Coat can be Factory Tinted to a preferred Texture, however for the best Heat Reflective Results, we recommend our Off White Colour.

Surface Preparation
New work:
Ensure that the concrete is fully cured and free from laitenance, form oils, release
compounds, salt deposits, dirt etc. It is recommended that the surface is either whipped
blasted using clean grit or high pressure water washed at a minimum of 2500psi pressure.
Major flaws should be patched with cement filler or other approved filling compound applied
according to package instructions.
Refurbishing Existing Coatings:
Check the adhesion of existing coatings by cutting through the coating with a sharp knife
forming an ‘X’ cut with the angle between the lines at approximately 30°. Firmly press
masking tape over the ‘X’ cut and then smartly pull the tape off keeping the tape
perpendicular to the surface. If coating is removed then the existing coating will not support
the weight of any applied coating and early failure of the coating system will occur. The
existing coating system will need to be removed and then treated as for new work. Major
flaws should be patched with cement filler or other approved filling compound applied
according to package instructions.
Mixing Instructions
Thoroughly mix each drum with a power mixer ensuring that the drum contents are stirred
from top to bottom. Hand mixing is possible but not recommended. Open the drums for mixing
only as required for use on the job. Drums should not be stored in direct sunlight for lengthy
periods of time.
Application
Solacoat Heat Reflective Base Coat Concrete Render may be applied by roller, brush or
hopper spray. Application must be uniform in direction as variations in finished appearance
may occur and be undesirable. Pock holes and other slight surface imperfections may require
filling with an application of the Solacoat Heat Reflective Base Coat Concrete Render prior to
the full application of the coating.
Suggested roller covers are 10mm nap for formwork and surfaces in good, smooth condition
and 20mm nap for formwork and surfaces in less than good condition. Brush application is
suggested only for small areas where spray or roller application is not practical. Hopper spray
Is recommended for broad areas where a very high standard of finish is required. The spray
nozzle should have an aperture of around 2.8 – 4 mm.
Application must be uniform in direction of application to ensure a quality aesthetic finished
coating appearance. Should a pattern be desired in the rendered finished system then the
applicator must ensure that the patterning is replicated to a high degree of accuracy and
uniformity.
The applied dry render is then topcoated with Solacoat or Coolshield Dynasty Heat Reflective
colours – refer individual Product Data Sheets for coating requirements.
The temperature of the substrate should be minimum 12°C and remain above 12°C for the
drying period. Do not paint if rain is expected within 4 hours of application.
Allow the paint to dry for a minimum of 2 hours prior to topcoating.
Coverage
On smooth surfaces where a minimum of filling is required: -
Fine approximately 5 – 7 square metres per litre
Medium approximately 4 – 6 square metres per litre
Heavy approximately 3 – 5 square metres per litre
Allowance should be made for additional usage where extra filling is required.
Drying
Touch dry in approximately ¾ - 1 hour depending on film build, temperature, air movement
and humidity. Topcoat after a minimum of 2 hours drying with the desired Solacoat or
Coolshield Dynasty Heat Reflective colours.
Cleanup
Wash all equipment promptly with water. Stubborn or semi-dried material may be removed
with warm soapy water.
Heat and Safety Benefits
Walls coated with the Solacoat Heat Reflective Base Coat Concrete Render/ Topcoat system
are expected to be 5 – 12°C cooler than if coated with traditional render coating systems. This
temperature reduction in heat loading would result in less heat transfer to the building’s
interior with consequent reduced demand for air-conditioning running costs to maintain a
comfortable interior temperature zone. This reduction in extra air-conditioning costs translates
to reduced power consumption costs for cooling purposes and hence in reduced green-house
gas emissions.
The reduced heat stress on the exterior of the building will result in a longer life-cycle
expectation for the building’s external facings.
